Freya Bramble-Carter British, 1991
Biographie
Bramble-Carter’s work examines notions of flow, cycles, nature, seasons, astronomy, and science fiction. Her “canvas” is the motif of the Grecian vessel of which she distorts the proportions in infinite combinations. From the classic, yet often made uncanny three-dimensional shapes, she experiments with colour, glazes, and collages to evoke a hybrid world of vegetal, carnal, and geological quality.
Born in London in 1991 Freya Bramble-Carter has been immersed in the world of ceramics from a young age thanks to her father Chris Bramble, a British artist and ceramicist of Guyanese origins, with whom she now trains and mentors ceramic students in their North London studio. She graduated from the Chelsea School of Arts in 2013, in London, after which she decided to dedicate her time as an artist to exploring clay.
Her most recent series of work, developed with 50 GOLBORNE, were made in collaboration with her father, Chris Bramble. They examine notions of filiation, transmission of her African Diaspora heritage, and her bi-racial conditions. Small beautifully sculptured heads-evoking classical medallions - masquerade in vivid colours, whilst the bodies of the vessels render bodily states of transition and transformation.
Bramble-Carter’s work has been exhibited regularly in the UK. It entered the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London earlier this year. It was featured in many media, including: the New York Times, The Guardian, and the Financial Times. Chris’s Bramble work. Chris Bramble work is part of the collections of many institutions including Victoria & Albert Museum, Glasgow Museum, National Gallery, Zimbabwe, Leicester City Museum, Ipswich Museum in the UK; National Gallery, Zimbabwe.
