The piece is technically a soft sculpture that blurs boundaries between sculputre, textile and painting. It is representative of Ugandan artist Sanaa Gateja's practice in which the use of recycled paper plays a major role, as well as the notions of craftmanship, and of community.
The work is made of hundred of conical paper "beads" that are made by hand collaboratively in the studio, that the artist reclaims from magazines, newspaper or pamphlets. The beads are tinted- then are stiched onto "lubugo", a fabric which is made from the bark of a local tree, that refers to ancient spiritual rites. The artist uses acryllic paint to finalise the work.
With its haptic, textile-like quality and a dynamic, vibrant visual composition, " Evocation" is a celebration of the East african rich, lush nature and a politcal reminder by the artist that the Ugandan economic development and fight against poverty should go hand-in-hand with innovations in sustainability.
