Chemu Ng’ok’s 'Creating/Community' conveys both a sense of the physicality of the body and at the same time an intense spirituality, as often in her work. Here we are in the middle ground favored by the artist, in which reality and dreams are interwoven.
A group of brightly coloured figures march together. Behind them there is a range of eerie undulating hills, lit by the soft light of dawn. The hills are rendered with a visual rhythm that presents them as if they are part of the group, accentuating the connection between the figures and the setting. The figures themselves are individualised by the bright colours of their robes. Some have empty space between them in colours contrasting colour with the background. Two of them nestle together in an egg-like shape, only partly separating them from rest. The diagonal and pyramid shape of the composition conveys a strong sense of community between the figures. The connection of the humans to their environment is both physical and spiritual, and the strength of the community suggests a common vision.
