A soft sculpture by Ugandan artist Sanaa Gateja that is representative of his practice in which the use of recycled paper plays a major role, as well as the notions of craftmanship, and of community.
The work has a haptic, textile-like quality with a dynamic, vibrant visual composition. It is made of hundred of conical paper "beads" that are made by hand collaboratively that the artist reclaims from magazines, newspaper or pamphlets. The beads are tinted- then are stiched onto "lubugo", a fabric which is made from the bark of a local tree, that refers to ancient spiritual rites. The artist uses acryllic paint to finalise the work.
" Seeds of Hope" is part of a new series of work in which the artist plays around the classic motif of the tree, reinventing its artistic treatment while alluding to the concept of the circular economy: the figurative motif is itself a reflection of the very materials that have been used to produce it.
